Kyrkleden in SundShow map
Castle, church, fortress, hills and views
Go hiking past Åland’s finest historical monuments and through a changing terrain – across rocky hills, through woods and along winding country lanes. Kyrkleden (the Church Trail) from Kastelholm Castle to Bomarsund Fortress (or the other way round) partly follows old church trails. It passes by the medieval Sund Church and offers a view over the Västra Kyrksundet lake, hence the name: Kyrkleden.
The trail is marked out with red-and-white posts or white markings on trees and stones, and can be completed in several stages. Sund Church and Vivasteby are good stopping-points. It can also be extended. In Bomarsund it ends at Brännklintstornet, a ruined tower. From there you can continue along a path marked out by posts leading to the Fortress of Bomarsund, and then on to the island of Prästö, where the path links up with a heritage trail.Remember to bring some provisions with you, as there is nowhere to buy food along the trail, and consider also that you will end up in a different place from where you started. The trail is comparatively challenging, especially along those stretches which pass through untouched nature and across rocky knolls, where it goes up and down quite a bit.
